Splinterlands is finally removing the Dark Energy Crystals from chest rewards as they replace them with the SPS tokens. This change will alter the platform’s economics and DEC Token (a pseudo stable token by Splinterlands), which has been off peg.
The new update is set to release on August 23 with the usual weekly maintenance. However, if the team finds it necessary to test the new features again, they’ve warned that the update could move to August 30.
As the new update goes live, you’ll no longer be finding DEC tokens in the chest. The reward chest will contain SPS tokens or the governance token that Splinterlands launched last summer.
Splinterlands is also planning to put the first version of its governance proposal before the players as the release date gets closer and closer.
SPS Tokens In Rewards Chest
Season rewards and Daily Quests will now have their own pool for each player tier. The exact amount of SPS cannot be determined. However, the team expects the Bronze chest to contain 0.12 tokens per chest. When it comes to the Champion level chests, it gets really interesting as you can expect an average of 18 SPS per chest.
The number of tokens found can vary depending on the number of chests obtained because the prizes are drawn from a pool that is shared by all players.
If you win SPS tokens in the reward chest, the SPS reward won’t automatically drop into your account. Instead, you’ll have to claim the reward on the SPS Management page. As soon as you claim the reward, the SPS tokens will be staked to your account.
If you want to unstake your SPS, you’ll have to vest the tokens and wait for four weeks. Splinterlands is playing this tactic to reduce the players that are only in for quick money. They the players to wait and participate in the governance system to increase player activity and long-term engagement. The game, however, will still offer daily token rewards leading to token dumping.
What About DEC?
Even though DEC will be issued much lower, it is still not vanishing. As soon as this announcement was made, DEC saw a 30% spike in its price. Unfortunately, this increase in price still isn’t enough as the peg is still not up to par. If you purchase Splinterlands packs with DEC, you Will get a discount. As of now, you’ll have to pay the equivalent of $2.90 for each pack.
